Character Info
Name: Barret Wallace
Canon: Final Fantasy VII
Canon Point: End of Remake, when the group leaves Midgar
Age: 35

Background: "He must open his eyes to the truth—that his corporate masters are profiting from the planet's pain. Only then can he redeem himself. I know you know this."

Personality: Note: Although I am pulling Barret from Final Fantasy VII: Remake, some of the events and behaviors I reference in his personality are from the original game canon. Barret is more nuanced and fleshed-out in the remake, but the earlier canon gives context and background for a lot of the behavior that you see in it.

"No, you can’t think like that. Whatever happened before, it was Shinra that pulled the trigger today."

Passionate, headstrong, and deeply principled, first impressions of Barret leave individuals with the sense of someone who is no-nonsense, no bullshit, and no compromise. Having dealt personally with losing his village and his friends and family due to Shinra corporate greed, and most relevant, his own faith in the promise that Mako energy would make the lives of the people he loved easier — Barret’s inward loathing for this decision in his past drives his aggressive, unyielding, and outspoken opinions in the present. "Hold onto this," he tells Tifa, after the Sector 7 plate collapse, "this anger." Because to Barret, to linger overlong on the pain he and his group have caused prevent them from stopping the greater evil of Shinra. His acts of domestic terrorism stem from years of witnessing firsthand and being the victim of Shinra’s oligarchy, and finally coming to the conclusion that any act of change would not occur until he himself enacted it. His methods are seen as extreme even within the environmental terrorism group, Avalanche — as a result, by the time the events of Final Fantasy VII Remake, his own group has splintered from the main one due to their use of dangerous explosives in the Mako reactors.

Naturally, Barret is mistrustful of anyone affiliated with Shinra: he believes even lower-rung employees are guilty of the crime of complicit cruelty, and his initial interactions with the SOLDIER-turned-mercenary, Cloud Strife, are rife with disagreements and annoyance on both sides. Cloud’s veneer of callous disregard is a point of particular contention: Barret is not all fury with no direction, you see. He believes whole-heartedly in his cause, despite his dramatics. It’s revealed over time that because of this unwavering belief, he’s a well-organized and well-connected leader, as well as a rather charismatic motivational speaker. His pep talks after missions are filled with a near religious fervor, emotionally effective, and above all else, genuine. Barret truly loves the Planet. He is, save Aerith, one of the most well-read of the group on the teachings of the Planet and Planetology, and knows for certain that Shinra is killing the world with its reactors. That being said, his methods are driven by a righteous sort of anger too, for all of his talk of greater good, and an unrelenting need for revenge. Barret has had everything stripped from him, and wishes to do the same to Shinra and its ilk. When he confronts President Shinra in his office, and offered anything to spare his life, all that Barret asks for is that his name be cleared of affiliations to Wutai. He owns up to the damage and suffering he’s caused, but he won’t abide by living a lie, or being seen as a traitor.

Despite his bluster and outward fury, inwardly, Barret is sensitive, loyal, kind and thoughtful. He is completely dedicated to his daughter, Marlene, often talking about her even during highly tense missions, and as stated above, has actually done a great deal of research on Planetology, including the religious philosophies of the Ancients, the progenitor race of humanity in Final Fantasy VII lore. He remembers even minute details about his allies in Avalanche, and is sensitive to their moods: he comforts Tifa in the wake of the Plate collapse, and eventually even warms to Cloud, who he expresses fondness for near the last half of the game and protects just as fiercely as he does his other allies. He is gutted by the deaths of Jessie and Biggs during the Plate collapse, and does everything in his power to rescue Wedge from the same fate. Barret also deals with shame and depression due to his disability and the events surrounding this. Years before the main game, one of his arms was amputated after he was ambushed by Shinra after the destruction of his village. He states that he fell into a deep depression after this time, and later, instead of getting a standard prosthetic, instead equipped himself with a weapon, in the hopes he might be better able to destroy Shinra.

Overall, a lot of Barret’s behavior stems from having a really strong sense of morality, from a need to atone himself, and even with his acts of extremism, from having a really big heart. He cares about people a great deal, especially his people, and his mistake at trusting Shinra when he was younger has haunted him for years. He is, as a result, deeply dedicated and loyal to his remaining friends and family, and will not only do anything to protect them, but do anything to see that others on the Planet don’t have to suffer like he did And that, of course, so that the Planet itself might have a future.

Powers:
Physical Strength: Barret is not physically augmented like Cloud, a martial arts master like Tifa, or able to speak to the Planet, like Aerith, but he is a huge guy. He’s muscular and strong, able to support Cloud’s weight and carry both him and Tifa out of the exploding plate pillar with ease. He isn’t the fastest guy in the world (as seen in the staircase climbing scene), but he is good at defense, having the highest HP and Vitality stats of all the main party members in Remake and being capable of taking the brunt of damage without collapsing. His abilities that do not deal with causing spray and group damage deal primarily in allowing him to act as a damage sponge for others.

Gun-arm: Barret’s most distinct trait is a customizable, fully-functional machine gun grafted to his right arm. This weapon can be swapped out for other guns (including laser guns, grenade launchers, and rocket launches) and short-range weapons such as claws, chainsaws, and wrecking balls used primarily for bludgeoning melee attacks. His greatest contribution to battles with his gun-arm is being able to hit ranged and flying enemies where melee combatants cannot.
